Trail Ride Update for Week of 6-18 to 6-20
Total to date Miles: 221
Day 13 -Wed 6-18-03
Miles: 18
Up at 4:30 and ridin by 7:00 am this day and from here on. The Evant Liars Club has been generous but I must move on. This day I ride one of th best scenic rides of the ride. The road to Golthwait from Evant is quiet, wide and the country is green and beautiful. A great day to pray and reflect. Not too hot. I end the day at the historic Owens ranch 7 miles short of Golthwait. If you do your research, you will find the Owens ranch was established in 1856 and has been in the family to this day with all sons and daughters still working the place. This family is gracious to me and friendly. One of them gives me a ride back to the Liars Club all the way to the gate. Interesting day.
Day 14 -Thurs 6-19-03
Miles: 17
I'm on Henery today and don't wanna leave his stable buddy. I park the rig at the Owens Ranch and head out to Golthwait. It's hot today. Real warm in fact. Henery is doing just fine though. At the little storein Star we stop and eat lunch with the Preacher. The preacher has preached cheerier sermons as he is now 90 years old and a bit cranky. Henery eats the leaves off the tree where I tie him and Preacher says lunch's over. In Golthwait I tie up Henery to a post at the local Dairy Queen and interest begins as I ride off with a milk shake....chocolate. Henery is not happy as he was not offered one and is a bit reluctant until the end of the ride. We stop at the Hill Country Farms owned by Jo Ann Johnson. This is a working ranch that employs and ministers to many retarded individuals and people of special needs. Quite a ministry. I fit right in but they were reluctant about Henery.
Day 15 -Fri 6-20-03
Miles: 17
Started at Hill Country Farms and until noon had a thankfully cloudy day. After a short lunch, it was 110 degree heat index. I'm on the Cheater horse and we look and find water constantly along the route. We eat lunch under a bridge and Cheat don't wanna leave when I do. We fuss over the matter a bit and in the end I convince him that if he wants his food in his own pasture tonight, he'd better come along. He does and I do and I tie Cheater up at the end of the day 221 miles from the house just south of Zephyr, Texas . Cheater says "thanky."
